- 名詞是用來表示人、動物、東西或地點的名稱。
也是實詞的一種，人、事、時、地、物、情感、概念等實體或抽象事物的詞。
名詞可以獨立成句，在句子中通常可以用代名詞來替代名詞。

主格的用法： - 做「主詞」：

動詞之前就是主詞，也就是這個句子的主角，
動詞之後就是受詞，也就是接受動詞意思的對象。
主詞用主格；受詞用受格。
而「格」可以解釋成：在句子中所處的地位。
至於所有格，就是用來表示對某一事物或人的所有權。
- 包括普通名詞、集合名詞、物質名詞、抽象名詞、專有名詞。
可數的名詞： 大部份的名詞是「可數名詞」，如人、大象、高麗菜等，可以很清楚地數出數目出來，就叫做「可數名詞」。又分「普通名詞」就是一般名稱與「集合名詞」指稱同類的人或同類動物的「全體」的名詞。- 普通名詞：

不可數的名詞： 有些東西太細小，如沙子，塵埃，根本無法數，就叫做「不可數名詞」，例如批薩 pizza 是不可數名詞。又可分為：- 物質名詞：

- 專有名詞：

中文裡對於名詞的數目比較不講究，單複數形式經常是一樣的。而且也沒有細分所謂可數或不可數的名詞。但是英文的名詞，可分成「有複數形態」與「沒有複數形態」。有複數形態的變化，又可分：
規則變化： - 一般在詞尾加s，

- 如果是母音加y結尾時,加上s即可,不用做特別的變化；字母的母音是 a e i o u，

- 一般以f或fe結尾的,變f或fe為ves，

意思改變： 有些變化成複數形式後『意思改變』了。如：personality（個性） personalities（多重人格） character（人格） characters （戲裡的角色） family（家庭，亦指家人） families（好幾個不同的家庭） water（水） waters（海、湖） 不同種類： 有些不可數名詞，用複數形態時，可指『不同種類』。如：
集合名詞如fruit、fish，以單數形式表示「所有水果」、「全部的魚」。當以複數形fruits或fishes出現時，表示強調不同種類，例如：meat meats tea teas food foods milk milks fruit fruits fish fishes experience experiences

每一個名詞都屬於某一種性：
- 陽性：名詞所稱的事物屬雄性生物
- 陰性：名詞所稱的事物屬雌性生物
- 通性：名詞所稱的事物包括雄性和雌性生物
- 中性：名詞所稱的事物無分雄性和雌性

- 一個名詞在句中一定要當主詞或受詞或補語
- 普通名詞為單數時，前面必須要有冠詞 (如 a/an, the, my, this, some)。
- 普通名詞為複數時，後面要加 -s 或 -es，前面不能有冠詞。如果指特定的人或事物，則可以加定冠詞 the。
